California’s Community Health Centers are Meeting the Moment!

2022 ANUAL CONFERENCE RECAP:

California Primary Care Association (CPCA) hosted our first in-person Annual Conference since 2019 on October 27-28, 2022 in Sacramento, CA!  It was wonderful to finally convene face-to-face and learn of the myriad of ways that our member health centers are meeting the moment and moving toward achieving healthy, just and equitable communities.

CPCA Highlights Climate Change & the Impact on Health Equity at Annual Conference

To kick-off the 2022 Annual Conference, CPCA offered a pre-conference event, Meeting the Moment: Addressing Climate Change Now, which brought together leaders and stakeholders addressing climate change as an imperative issue for health centers. Sessions focused on the impact of climate change on health centers and patients from diverse perspectives including climate change as a health issue; advocacy and sustainable infrastructure for health centers; and climate change as an environmental justice and health equity issue.

From State Advocacy to Regulation & Implementation: Retaining Our Health Center Workforce through Retention Payments & Training Programs

The COVID-19 pandemic tested our limits and capacities, but we are excelling together. During this challenging time, community health centers (CHCs) in California collaborated to deliver care to millions of patients, pivoted to virtual care, and retrained or relocated to meet the moment.

Increasing Access to Oral Healthcare at Health Centers

Community-Based Clinical Education for Dental Student Grant Advisory Committee:

The 2022-23 state budget makes major investments in healthcare workforce development, including a one-time allocation of $10 million to create new and enhanced community-based clinical education rotations with the goals to 1) improve access to quality healthcare services and 2) foster a health care workforce that can address current and emerging needs.

CPCA Supports Health Centers Prepare to Continue Providing Critical Health Services in Times of Emergencies

California has seen its share of extreme conditions this year with record breaking temperatures, major wildfires, poor air quality, and threats of widespread power outages in addition to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and now a surge in respiratory viruses among pediatric patients.

Responding to the Current Labor Market: Key Findings from CPCA's 2022 Compensation & Benefits Survey

The backbone of California's community health centers (CHCs) is its mission driven, diverse and committed workforce. However, the current labor market continues to exacerbate a CHC’s workforce challenges while also impeding its ability to expand access to care in the communities they serve.  According to CPCA's 2022 Compensation & Benefits Survey, health centers are operating in a labor market that is characterized by high levels of inflation, rising costs of labor, and a severe shortage of professionals working within the healthcare industry.

Alternative Payment Methodology Enters New Phase!

The FQHC Alternative Payment Methodology (APM) enters a new phase of operationalization. On December 1st, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) opened the application period for health centers interested in participating in the APM for the January 2024 contract year. APM participation is voluntary and health centers are guaranteed to receive at least their PPS equivalent for services provided. An application and a health plan attestation form are required for interested health centers.

Leadership Equity Program’s Cohort One Completes 10-Month Program!

Congratulations to the Leadership Equity Program’s (LEP’s) first cohort for completing their aspiring c-suite leadership program in November 2022.  The cohort participants met at the CPCA offices for their final in-person meeting before receiving a special Certificate of Completion on November 19th.  The Leadership Equity Program team would also like to extend a special “Thank You” to the Capacity Building Executive Leadership Members as well as the Leadership Executive Program Advisory Committee for their ongoing support and participation in the program.
