Highlights from the 2023 Financial Conference for CFOs and Billing Managers

On May 31-June 2, 2023, California Primary Care Association (CPCA) hosted the 2023 Financial Conference for CFOs and Billing Managers in La Jolla, CA at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. More than 350 community health center (CHC) professionals gathered to learn and share strategies to improve the financial strength and sustainability of California’s CHCs.

This year’s Financial Conference sessions focused on topics relevant to the current healthcare landscape including Alternative Payment Methodology, leveraging data to improve financial systems, current and upcoming changes to Medicare, and more!

CPCA President and CEO Francisco J. Silva was on hand to welcome the group and highlight the important role of CHCs in California’s healthcare system.

This conference was the perfect opportunity for health center financial professionals to learn from and engage with their peers, including community health leader Cheryl Peterson Pine who presented “Better Together: How to Bridge the Gap between Business and Program.”

Empowering Health Center Leaders: Insights from the 2023 Region IX Clinical Excellence & Leadership Conference

Each year, CPCA and the Western Clinicians Network (WCN) partner to host the Region IX Clinical Excellence and Leadership Conference, an event that brings health center leaders together to discuss ways to strengthen clinical teams and improve care delivery and health outcomes. This year’s event was hosted in sunny San Diego on June 25-27, 2023. The conference welcomed nearly 200 participants, including members of the Arizona Alliance for Community Health Centers, Hawaii Primary Care Association, and Nevada Primary Care Association.

The conference began with an inspiring welcome by CPCA’s President & CEO Francisco J. Silva and warm remarks by WCN Board President Dr. Javier Luna.

Many of this year’s sessions, including “Leading the Way to Wellness: Strategies for Well-being at Work”, presented by Joelle LaGuerre, CPLP, Founder of Pro-YOU Consulting, focused on the important topic of addressing health center staff burnout, an issue that remains top of mind for CHC leadership. Further expanding upon ways to prevent and address burnout, Petaluma Health Center’s Director of Innovation, Jessicca Moore, presented a model that includes utilizing a Clinical Support Team to balance workload in a financially sustainable way.

Additional sessions highlighted best practices for health center compliance programs, the vision of California’s Data Exchange Framework initiative, and federal updates presented by the National Association of Community Health Center’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ron Yee, and Sue Lin, PhD, MS, the Acting Office Director for the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care.
